Ski Resorts
Virginia is an excellent destination for both mountain and beach lovers. With the western part of the state stretching into the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains, Virginia also offers some wonderful choices for skiing. For those unfamiliar with the area, technically the Blue Ridge Mountain range is a section of the Appalachians; they are aptly named for their bluish color when viewed from afar.
Virginia is home to four major ski resorts: Bryce Resort in Basye, VA; Massanutten Resort in Massanutten, VA; The Homestead Ski Area in Hot Springs, VA; and Wintergreen Resort in Wintergreen, VA.
Bryce Resort, situated in the Shenandoah Valley, a two hour drive from Washington D.C., began as a summer mountain retreat in 1909. In the 1960s, it was expanded to become a winter escape as well. Today, Bryce offers eight trails, evenly split between beginner, intermediate, and advanced (single black diamond only; there are no double black diamonds), and four lifts (two chair and two carpet lifts). Adults can feel comfortable that their children are learning excellent ski skills in Bryce’s Ski School, and more experienced children can have fun in Bryce’s ski racing program. In addition to skiing, you can snowboard and snow-tube at Bryce, as well as a host of other outdoor activities. Bryce hosts a number of ski events throughout the winter, including the Virginia Governor’s Slalom and Giant Slalom competitions and the Collegiate Slalom and Giant Slalom competitions. Lodging choices for guests run the gamut from small “lock offs,” to townhouses, to charming detached homes.
Massanutten Resort, also in the Shenandoah Valley, was developed by farmer John L. Hopkins, II in 1971. For snow sports, Massanutten is quite impressive, offering seven lifts (including Virginia’s first quad-lift); 14 trails evenly split between beginner, intermediate, and advanced; two terrain parks (each with a lift); and the Peaked Mountain Express Tube Park. Skiers and snowboarders have the option to rent all necessary equipment at the resort, which is great if you don’t own your own or if it all doesn’t fit in the car. The Snow Sport Learning Center offers lessons for skiers and snowboarders of all levels, and if kids get tired when parents want to keep skiing, Massanutten even offers a licensed child care facility for ages 3-12.
The Homestead Ski Area is part of the gorgeous Homestead Resort, known as a luxurious resort in the Alleghany Mountains offering history and hospitality. The ski area has nine trails spread over 45 acres for both beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, and has all the amenities as a resort dedicated fully to skiing, including: five lifts, equipment rental (both skiing and snowboarding), ski staff for lessons, snowmaking capabilities, cross-country ski courses, guided snowmobile tours, snow-tubing, snowshoeing, ice skating, and a picturesque fireside lodge for relaxation. When a respite from skiing is needed, guests are welcome to visit the Homestead’s spa, one of the world’s premier spas. Guests may also find one of the hotel’s 483 rooms to be the most attractive lodging in Virginia, with elegance and sophistication the resounding impression.
Wintergreen Resort is comprised of 11,000 acres on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Wintergreen offers 24 trails, 20 percent of which are beginner, 40 percent intermediate, and 20 percent advanced. Skiers will appreciate Wintergreen’s six chairlifts, two of which are express lifts, packing six people into a row. Both adults and children can take either private or group lessons through the Wintergreen’s Snowsports School, and all equipment can be rented. Wintergreen boasts Virginia’s largest tubing park, “The Plunge,” allowing you to reach almost 30 mph down a hill stretching over three football fields long. Lodgers have their choice of studios, mountain villas, and luxurious condominiums complete with kitchens, living areas, and warm fireplaces.
For those who can’t get enough of the skiing and want to enjoy the mountains year round, Wintergreen, Massanutten, and Bryce Resort all offer a variety of condominiums, houses, and other properties for rent, timeshare, or sale.
All of these resorts’ websites offer information on the weather report and skiing conditions. This can be crucial information to know, as Virginia doesn’t always see the depth of snow like resorts out west do. Even without fresh snow, these resorts have learned how to create their own weather through making snow, which they frequently blow every night to ensure optimal skiing conditions for the pleasure of their skiing and snowboarding guests.
