Outlet Malls

Virginia is home to a number of outlet malls, perfect for the deal-seekers and luxury-lovers alike. Choices include the Potomac Mills Outlet Mall in Woodbridge, Virginia; the Prime Outlets in Williamsburg, Virginia; the Williamsburg Outlet Mall and the Williamsburg Pottery Factory, both in Lightfoot, Virginia; Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets in Leesburg, Virginia; and the Crate and Barrel Outlet in Alexandria, Virginia.

Williamsburg might be your first obvious stop, as you can hit a number of outlet centers in one day (or one long day, that is!). The Prime Outlets, which consistently ranks in the top ten outlets in the entire industry, has expanded in the last few years and now includes over 90 major stores, including some designer outlets such as Guess?, Anne Klein, Britches, Brooks Brothers, Calvin Klein, COACH, Dooney and Burke, Gap, L.L. Bean, Nautica, Isotoner, Coldwater Creek, and Liz Claiborne. Spring 2008 will bring even more designers, such as True Religion, Bath and Body Works, Burberry, Tommy Bahama, and Disney. This outdoor center is pet-friendly, so your dog is welcome to tag along (on a leash), while you enjoy the great weather and shopping. Treat the well-behaved kids to Ben and Jerry’s, and pick up delicious treats for yourself at Harry and David or the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.

After a morning at the Prime Outlets, you can drive right down the road to Lightfoot for two more outlet centers. Taking a break from clothing, shoes and perfumes, the Williamsburg Pottery Factory offers a wide variety of pottery, ceramics, furniture, garden items made of cement and other materials, china, glassware, wines, cheeses, and plants. Many of the pieces are actually made in-house, by local artisans trained for years in their particular craft. The Pottery Factory itself is a tradition; it has been open for over 69 years! With over 200 acres of shops and products, you can certainly find what your home needs at the Pottery Factory.

Right across the street from the Williamsburg Pottery Factory, you will find the Williamsburg Outlet Mall, which offers a respite from poor weather with over 40 indoor shops. Store choices include L'eggs Hanes Playtex, Dress Barn, Dexter Shoes, Avon Beauty Center, Farberware, Famous Footwear, Totes, and Linen Barn. Famished shoppers can easily find sustenance at one of Williamsburg Outlet Mall’s two food courts. For an insider’s bonus, there are complimentary mall coupons—worth over $100.00—for all Military/military dependants, AAA members, and group passengers available at Levi's/Dockers Outlet by Designs.

For any of your travel partners uninterested in shopping, Williamsburg offers thousands of other potential activities, from the Busch Gardens amusement park to tours of beautiful historic plantations.

Northern Virginia provides a few more outlet centers to the list. Potomac Mills, in Woodbridge, is just 30 minutes south of Washington D.C. on Interstate 95. China, gourmet foods, sporting goods, shoes, electronics and cosmetics are just some of the categories of Potomac Mills’ 200+ stores. For clothing, Potomac Mills touts designer names such as Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers, Bebe, Chico's, Eddie Bauer, Gap, Jones New York, L.L. Bean, Old Navy, Levi's/Dockers, Liz Claiborne, Nautica, Polo Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger. Kids will love the Build-A-Bear Workshop, LEGO Outlet, and OshKosh B’Gosh. Teens and Juniors will be pleased to see Bebe, Guess?, Bath and Body Works, H&M, and Abercrombie & Fitch. Moms might love the Nordstroms Rack and “Off 5th”, Sacks Fifth Avenue Outlet. Potomac Mills offers plenty of food choices, such as Subway, Quizno’s, Cajun Street Café and Grille, and an AMC Theater to rest any weary shopping legs.

Also located in Northern Virginia, Leesburg is just 20 minutes south of the Dulles Airport. Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets is another outdoor outlet center, promoting a quaint village environment that bursts with name-brands and designers. Stores include Ann Taylor, Lacoste, Banana Republic, Restoration Hardware, Barneys New York, Burberry, Gap Outlet, Nike, Off 5th-Saks Fifth Avenue, J. Crew, Pottery Barn, and Waterford Wedgwood. Other stores cater towards luggage, accessories, jewelry, and shoes. The Starbucks can perk up any sluggish shopper, and hunger can be tamed at Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips or City Deli, two choices among a few others for food.

For a day or weekend trip, any of these outlet destinations is sure to pack your car with loads of designer goodies at a significantly reduced price. Because many of them are entirely outdoors, checking the weather forecast in advance is a smart move.
